President

Jie Han Yeow
To me, a president is the figurehead and the lead representative of an organisation, being entrusted by the members to lead that organisation and bring it to new heights. A president would also have to be someone who understands the organisation inside out, and will be able to step up to the duties of others if so required. I believe that I am able to take on the Presidential position of MSO in the upcoming year because of the experiences that I have gained from being heavily involved in the organisation of all the activities and events throughout the year, which included being the Treasurer of the Sports Carnival and co-ordinating the other sporting events during 2nd semester. Furthermore, successfully carrying out my sponsorship sourcing duties as the Finance EP of MFest this year has granted me a great deal of exposure and provided a good training ground for my time management and people skills, at the same time allowing me to assume a small leadership role. As such, I feel that I am ready to step up as President of MSO, to leading this amazing club in up keeping its heritage in UNSW and deep appreciation in our hearts.

I believe that each and every one of us should attain much more than just a degree after university, and I will strive to ensure that our members gain much more in their overseas education here in Australia through the efforts and dedication of MSO. If elected, I plan to increase membership benefits for MSO members and maintain the high level of quality events that have consistently been organised these past two years. Finally, in conjunction with the many joint events that we have with our main affiliates, I also plan to engage MSO more with the other societies in UNSW, as I believe that a multicultural society should make the most of a culturally diverse environment as well.

Vice President

Kay Vin Tan
I am currently a 2nd year Commerce/ Advance Science student. By being ex-treasurer in MSO and also one of the Finance directors of MFest this year, I now have understood further on how the club activities work financially and I am confident that I have the capability of improving the club activities with this advantage. It is said that money makes the world go round, thus by understanding the basis of every single events, I can ensure that MSO will fully utilize its resources efficiently. Furthermore, I have also taken on the role of a Human Resources director in Malaysia Fest 2011 where I am able to take on leadership role in organising the volunteers to ensure they fully understood their responsibilities and execute them appropriately during Mfest. All these roles were undertaken this year as such, proving me to be an organised and well balanced individual where it will prove to be valuable for a Vice President.

Personally, I believe that vice president’s role doesn’t stop at assisting the President in accomplishing the task at hand. The role of a vice president is equally as important as the president in serving as one of the representative voice of MSO members. As the numbers of Malaysian students keep increasing, it is now, more than ever that Malaysian students need a strong, dedicated and accountable representation. This is what I intend to deliver as a Vice President of MSO.

Through the heavy involvement in this club for the past year, it has made me realise how significant this club is towards Malaysian students. I believe I am now ready to take on this responsibility in providing the members of MSO as much as possible.

As vice president I would:
· Outreach to the other Malaysians in the university who have yet to know the existence of this club.
· Maintain, improve and raise the awareness of the services offered by MSO.
· Work closely with the President and the rest of MSO team in providing a better facility of events in order to improve the student experience here in Sydney.
· Do my best in representing the interest of YOU at all levels making sure that the decisions taken by the club will have a positive effect on your student experience.
· Increase cooperation between different societies be it club who are in the same university or club from other university to ensure that YOU will enjoy better / bigger events.

Honorary Secretary

Kaveiinaa Mathavan
Fix a time and date for meetings
If an event is organised, work on it and towards it from the start.
Be the president’s sidekick when needed.

Treasurer

1) Christina Ann
I am Sue Jen (Christina) and I am currently in my second year of a Commerce degree, majoring in Accounting and Finance. I am the current webmaster for MSO and one of the Finance Directors for Malaysia Festival (MFest) 2010 and 2011. Besides that, I have held positions as a treasurer as well as assistant treasurer in secondary school. Since secondary school, I have been doing activities related to record keeping. Thus, I believe I have the required experience to take up this role as a treasurer for MSO. Although the scope of responsibility is slightly different from that of a secondary school’s society treasurer, I believe that I am capable of carrying out all the responsibilities for this position. This is because I am a fast learner when it comes to picking up new tasks. Apart from that, during my term as a webmaster for MSO, I have been given the chance to organise events and help out whenever needed, which I have truly enjoyed. Therefore, I would like to continue contributing to MSO. If elected, I will maintain the records done by the previous treasurer and ensure that the society is always in good financial standing. As next year will be my final year, I promise to give my best when carrying out my duties for MSO, if elected.

2) Mabel Long
My name is Mabel Long and I am currently a second year Economics and Finance student. I have been very involved in MSO’s events ever since attending this university. MSO has brought about much comfort, friends and a home away from home for me and other members like you. Thus, I am keen and motivated to be part of this committee as treasurer, to provide and continue what this society has given to me the last two years.
Skills and experience:
I believe that I am well suited to take on the position of treasurer both in terms of my academic achievements and personal skills. I am a numerate person and at present completing a double major in Financial Economics and Finance. However, I strongly consider practical experience to be more valuable than theoretical work.
Working as a customer service representative in a call centre, and later on promoted to be assistant manager, I have handled customers’ finances, such as credit cards and cash, accounts and membership database and have also been put in charge of direct orders, whereby the cost and profit for each restaurant were done on the spot as an order is taken. Working in such a fast paced environment, I have learnt to work efficiently under pressure, balance and administer the company’s day to day finances and liaise with suppliers, customers, and managers etc., providing me with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organisation and teamwork skills suitable for the role of treasurer. Besides that, my second job working in a sales orientated industry involves handling thousands of dollars during a shift, which has given me a sense of responsibility, a vital characteristic a treasurer should possess.
Missions and goals in becoming treasurer:
· Deal with financial matters efficiently and effectively, such as collecting and preparing invoices, administering the society’s accounts etc.
· Constantly keeping up to date records to ensure the accuracy and transparency of the accounts.
· Produce an efficient budget where funds are allocated to be utilised most resourcefully
· Ensure the transparency of records within the society.
· Optimising the resources available for events to deliver the utmost quality for members.
· To be an active team player with the committee, help colleagues, organise bigger and better events and come up with the best year possible for MSO!

I believe besides being organised, good with money and budgeting, a treasurer should also put in commitment, qualities which I have shown, by standing by my job and role of assistant manager for 3 years and on-going, putting time and effort attending every MSO event and being loyal to the society which has given me so much. Therefore, I feel that I could bring much more than imagined to this committee, from my experience, to skills and enthusiasm.

Male Social Officer

Jeffrey Jonathan Voon
I am a first year undergraduate in UNSW, currently enrolled in a double degree in Environmental Engineering and Commerce. I enjoy reading and jogging during my spare time.

I would like to take this opportunity to show my thanks for being provided the chance to run for a position in the MSO Committee, and also to show my gratitude on the encouragement and advise the Committee has given me throughout the past few weeks.

As a first year student of UNSW, the transition from high school to university life has been nothing like I have ever expected. I expected the partying, the occasional clubbing, the drinking, the socialising etc. I have just never imagined that I would be enjoying the “uni life” to this extent, whilst still managing to juggle between my social and study life to ensure that I get the most out of university. The Malaysian Student Organisation of UNSW has played an integral part in terms of my social life and how much joy I have gotten out of it. I can only hope that I will not only continue to enjoy the life MSO has given to me, but that I might also have the opportunity to share with others the joy I have experienced thus far.

If I am so lucky to be bestowed upon the role/position of Male Social Officer, I would take up the position with grace, honour and pride. I will be gracious to the MSO Committee and its fellow members. I will honour the role and place it as a priority, not before my studies. I will be proud and thankful for the privilege being part of a rich community.

From being the Male Social Officer of MSO, I will be able to gain experience in so many aspects of life, which will only benefit my future. Alexa, the 2011 Female Social Officer of MSO has shared invaluable wisdom to me. For her, it has been a fantastic experience having taken up the role and is eternally thankful for it. She told me that, from being a Social Officer, she has met countless friends, made honest partners involved in the businesses, particularly in the business of clubs, and has also created unforgettable memories during her last 11 months as Female Social Officer. The Internal Secretary, Khin Yew has also shared some information with me, telling me that though being part of the committee can be stressful at times, the experience and joy gained from all this is priceless.

I would not only like to fill my life with more joy and happiness, but also in the life of others. I would be provided the chance to unite peoples from all diversities. Malaysia, being a mulit-racial, multi-cultural country, it brings happiness and satisfaction to me to know that people from all ethnics of life can live together in peace. Being in UNSW, not only will I have the chance to unite people all around Malaysia, but I will also have the opportunity to bring together people all around Asia and so many other parts of the world. It will be a unique experience for me.

In high school, I was privileged to be given the role of Captain of International Students, but had later turned down the offer. It was far too large a responsibility to handle at the time. That was about 18 months ago. Now, I am more ready than ever to embrace a given role, and to take up more responsibilities.

Webmaster

Farah Hanim Zahari
I am a student who is passionate to design the website for Malaysian Student Organisation (graphics, animation and functionality) with my knowledge and skills in software. I had attended a computer course in 2010 while waiting for my Australian matriculation result in my hometown. Although I have no specific experience in handling websites, I am keen and determined to learn in this particular area. I am approachable, open to suggestions and comments by all. As a future accountant, I believe that I have good skill in communication and attention to detail. Most importantly, I am enthusiastic to be part of MSO committee for next year and if I am elected, I will do my best to address the needs of the members while increasing their participation in this student club.

Publisher

Sarah Chew
As a student member of MSO, I was able to garner many benefits from the activities organised.
This had led me to pursue a more active role in the organisation, in order to be more involved with like-minded individuals from the Malaysian student community.
In addition, I hope to further develop invaluable soft skills such as leadership and interpersonal skills from participation in the committee.
If successfully elected, I aim to do the following:
1. Diligently perform my responsibilities to the best of my abilities.
2. Commit to duties as part of the committee and assist fellow members whenever required.
3. Continuously improve on my work by remaining open to constructive criticism.
4. Strive to maintain the good name of MSO in all avenues.
5. Maintain a positive energy and have fun with the experience.
