BBQ

people.jpgWe start semester 1 of 2008 with our Welcoming BBQ which has always been MSO’s tradition to do so. (I assure you there are plenty of people in the BBQ, not only these handsome dudes in the picture)

The weather was nice and sunny making it the perfect day for a beach outing. (yes, although some people (like me -_-) did get sunburnt in the end because the sunscreen got lost in transition… tsk tsk….)

cooking.jpgMany Malaysians came for the food, sun and fun, while our committee members cooked (BBQeud) chicken and sausage for the public. (and end up being BBQued themselves under the hot sun!) The sausage took ages to cook, or maybe its just me who did not study engineering and have no idea how to make the heat disperse better on the cooking plate (or whatever its called)

prize.jpg

Then we had games and finally, the most awaited event was the lucky draw. Our luckiest winner walked away with a spankin new MP3 player!

mso1.jpg

Overall, (like most of our events) it was a success and we hope to see you Malaysians again for other events.

Signing off permanently, (yes! my very last post!) Goodluck to the 2 brand new publishers! :)

O-Week

If you haven’t signed up for Malaysian Society in O-week, then what are you waiting for?

Overall O-week was a success for us. Even though the rules for joining us has changed and works against our favour, we still manage to sign up a big number of Malaysians, which goes to show how passionate Malaysians are to be a part of a society that values friendship and …well.. FUN!
mso.jpg
Of course walking around with Malaysian mascots (random dudes wearing the Malaysian flag like superman’s cape) does help in attracting Malaysians to our humble store located somewhere in the corner of some random building somewhere out there. A little shout out and brochures detailing heaps of random events lined up plus getting to know your friendly committee members is all it takes for a Malaysian to sign onto the MSO boat making our day underneath the hot and overcrowded booth worthwhile.

We just wanna welcome all the new people that joined us and a big shout out to loyal old members. We have got heaps of “stuff” and events lined up for you.

BBQ coming up. Sports tryouts coming up. Oh and we have 2 new publisher post up for grabs for the bi-election 18th March 7.30pm. So get ready for 2008!

Signing off for whatever limited time left,
Stephanie T

PASAR MALAM - A Malaysian Night Market

n596966334_664379_8377.jpg
One thing is for sure of Malaysians who leave their country (be it temporarily or not), is that we carry our heritage and culture wherever we go. The same can be said for Malaysian students here at UNSW, Sydney. At 25th October 2007, the Malaysian Society (MSO) hit it off with a bang with its historical first ever “Pasar Malam” night held on the Australian university’s campus. The event was launched by the society to promote Malaysian culture, tradition and of course, Malaysian food.

n596966334_664398_2043.jpg

The first hundred to arrive at 6pm were greeted with goodie bags and a floating helium balloon, something to remember us by. Overall, more than 600 people (Malaysians and non-Malaysians) made their way to the UNSW beergarden (hmmm should we mention… beer?) where we held our loud but humble event. Some came with hope and expectation while others come with curiosity in the heart driven by fliers and posters promoting the event. But all in all, everyone left feeling amazed and satisfied.

n596966334_664408_3975.jpg

Food we take for granted so much in Malaysia, such as satays, sago desserts and teh tarik were all main attractions here. Stalls selling authentic and delicious Malaysian food were set up along the gates with each, its own extended queue of people eagerly waiting to buy, taste and savour our local delicacies. The atmosphere was brightened up with a live band concert consisting of talented Malaysian musicians singing away to the tune of (I can’t remember any song names….) & (another song) while people danced, relax and enjoyed their food.

n596966334_664432_8811.jpg

Lucky draw winners were announced later on in the night and the a tipsy, jolly Australian guy gets to go back with a brand new LCD monitor for being able to toss-a-coin-nearest-to-the-bottle, a game held for the entertainment of all. Even though the weather was forecasted to go wrong on this particular day with predictions of thunderstorms, our event went smoothly with only casual short-lived showers, which made us wonder that maybe someone out there wants ‘Pasar Malam’ to be a great success which it definitely was.

Malaysia Boleh! Thank you, Thank you

Night Before Raya - Moonlight Beach Chaos 2007

12th October 2007 was the date of our annual Beach Chaos and just as the name implies, it was held at a beach under the moonlight at very questionable weather temperatures.
firelight.JPG
Hence, to start off the event, our president lights up a “survivor” like torch… ahhh the MSO tribe has spoken. (although, the fire seen in the picture is an imagination how a our torch fire would look like….0_O and the fire was a great place to warm our freezing…umm, body)

freefood.JPG

Then we were greeted by ours sisters and brothers Malaysian from other unis and our own MSO members who came and gave us support amid the ‘estrange weather’ and help us finished the delicious pizzas, homemade jellies and JUNK FOOD!! What’s a Malaysian event without free food?! This time, there wasn’t much leftovers!
game.JPG

Once everyone was warm (exaggeration) and comfy, we started the night with bullrush. It’s a game where one person carries someone else like a piggyback and run around chasing people. And the beach comes alive with chaos and as Malaysians scurried all over the place to avoid the dynamic duo. Females have tried to carry their male counterparts to no avail…
sand.JPG

Then it was a round of limbo… conclusion: we do have very talented and flexible people. Although the stereo was out of battery so people limboed to the sound of cheering.
Then, it was rest, and MORE GAMES! Like spinning around a stick and running which was fun to watch as the person wobbles around. Unfortunately, the drunkenness did not last long… ah well…Last but not least, was a very ummm questionable game of listening to the leader that brings so much laughter that it made people hungry again for another round of pizzas and yummy jellies. (a picture speaks a thousand words) [I think Sam liked that game very much??]

Finally, to close off the event, we have a ritual to bury our president in sand as our sign of appreciation for a successful night. (cold weather, cold sand…cold…cold…)
strong.JPG
Overall, I (because there is no other publisher except me, muahahaha) conclude that it was a successful event ~ So look forward to Pasar Malam night! To whoever other than the committee who reads this (-____-) mark it down in your calendars! Thursday 25th October 2007! It’s gonna be awesome.

Signing off: Stephanie T
