Report: Dragon Boating 2011

Who organised it? MSO (Jen & Christina), SUAMS, MASA, MSA
When was it? 7th May 2011, Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm
Where was it held? Bank St, Pyrmont
How many people attended? 80 participants and approx. 20 supporters
How much did it cost? $5 for each participant
What did we do?
It was sunny on that Saturday morning. What a nice weather to go for a boating! I was so excited as it was my first time ever to experience such thing. Since I have never been to that place before, I decided to join the other MSO members who all left from UNSW’s main gate together. We reached Railway Square to take our second bus at around 9.05 am and according to the schedule, we just missed the previous bus by 5 minutes! URRGHH. The next bus was scheduled to be there at 9.30 am. So guess what?? Hell yeah, we walked there! Haha.

The walk didn’t feel that long as we chatted and made jokes with each other along the way. We even took a picture together by the roadside.

As we walked, we were very impressed as we bumped into 4 identical RED FERRARI cars waiting in front of the traffic light.

I couldn’t believe my eyes and I swear that was the sexiest thing I had ever witnessed. I was this close to go and take a picture of myself with those. Unfortunately, the group has decided to speed up in case we could not make it on time. Haih!

We reached there just on time for the collection of money and waiver forms. We, and the other society members were first briefed by our facilitators (the Naga Spirit people) on safety measure and how to handle the paddles.

We then were assigned to the position on the boat before going for a water training.
Synchronization and speed were the main keys for the race so we trained for that for nearly 45 minutes.

By half way of the training, my arms were already burning and all I wanted to do was to start the freaking race and win!

The next thing I know, we were already at the starting line of the race and my heart was pumping. As soon as the race started, I paddled my heart out. I could not even open my eyes because everyone was just paddling crazily and the salty water kept splashing all over my body and face. I was just relying on the voice that counted one! two! three! all the way. But it came to my dissappointment knowing that we came last for the first race, and there was a close tie between us and Macquarie University. As far as I was concerned, UTS was disqualified because they failed to stick to the female-male ratio. Though there were some confusions and disputes over the results, I still think MSO did a real great job :)

By the time we got back to the shore and took loads of pictures together with the other teams, my stomach was growling like hell. Luckily it was time for pizzas! Apparently the organizer provided a whole lot of them, so I took 5 slices. One after another. Yes I did. Heeee. I thought I was really tiring and just wanted to go home.

Next thing I knew, I was at the Fish Market with my friends, enjoying our seafood and talking about how great the event was. Lol.

All in all, it was really an amazing experience for me. I have never even saw a dragon boating event before. What more in Sydney.

So for those of you who wanna do something different, do make sure you come join us next time around!
